Scotty’s Castle, Death Valley, CA
One of the most interesting man-made attractions in Death Valley is Scotty’s Castle. This sprawling Spanish Villa designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was built in 1927. Despite its popular name, Death Valley Ranch was built and owned by investor and businessman Albert Johnson. Scotty was Walter Scott, a benefactor of Albert Johnson’s who claimed ownership of the “castle.”The story of Scotty’s Castle is a large part of what makes this attraction so interesting. Albert Johnson came to Death Valley because he was swindled out of thousands of dollars by Death Valley Scotty. Yet, the two became such close friends, Johnson built Scotty his own home near the Death Valley Ranch. Living history tours allow visitors to learn the details of the intriguing story behind Scotty’s Castle. In many ways, the story seems to raise more questions than it answers. There is also a special underground tour available that highlights the ingenious technology used in the design of this impressive desert compound.
